The Great Barrier Reef

Cruising the endlessly blue waters of the Great Barrier Reef, walking the palm tree-lined beaches of tropical islands and having mermaid-like underwater adventures in a marine wonderland is pure magic. Just the sun, sand, the sea and me.

Today at The Land of Lavish we are voyaging to one of Australia’s most remarkable natural wonders, the Great Barrier Reef! Located in the Coral Sea, on Australia’s north-eastern coast, this popular holiday destination is home to the world’s largest coral reef system. Stretching more than 2,000 kilometres along the Queensland coastline, this living masterpiece is so big it can be seen from outer space. It is even one of the seven wonders of the natural world, and is breathtaking to say the least.

A weekend getaway trip to the Great Barrier Reef last summer was paradise and the options for adventure at this heavenly destination are endless. You can swim, snorkel, dive, sail or take a scenic flight over the natural icon. What can you expect? Sparkling blue waters, sun soaked beaches, multi-coloured corals and thousands of tropical species in the marine wonderland. On my great journey to the Great Barrier Reef, I cruised to Green Island and took a full day trip to the Marine World activity platform moored in the middle of the sea, where I snorkelled and took a glass-bottom boat tour to admire the underwater attractions including the world’s largest collection of corals, coral sponges, molluscs, tropical fish, sea turtles and giant clams. Whilst in Cairns, I also went on a daytrip to Kuranda, where I saw the serene Barron Falls and the pristine beauty of Tropical North Queensland’s ancient rainforests.
